Angela + Dominic’s Nautical & Mermaid-Themed Wedding Stationery

Angela + Dominic's Nautical Mermaid-Themed Wedding Stationery | Design : Angela Navarra & Printing : Rolling Press

What do you get when you cross a longtime love of Disney’s The Little Mermaid with a seriously talented, about-to-be-married designer? You get these awesome, nautical and mermaid-themed save the date invites by Angela Navarra, who created these darling invites for her wedding by the sea.

Angela + Dominic's Nautical Mermaid-Themed Wedding Stationery | Design : Angela Navarra & Printing : Rolling Press

I am loving all of the little details in these fun save the date invites, from the sweet little “hello” tugboat to the “fish bubble” containing the guest’s address to all of the cute fish and crustaceans swimming in the paper sea. Add some super swirly, hand drawn lettering and a return address that’s being carried along the undersea current, and you have a unique and memorable invite turned keepsake for the lucky guests who received these cuties in their mailboxes.

Angela shares about this labor of love:

I wanted to create something that was self-contained and displayed movement, all in paper form. I gave myself a tall order to fill but, since this was for my own wedding, I had to do it!

I love fold and mail stationery, which inspired this concept, and created custom typography and illustrations, which I had a blast doing. I made sure that, when a guest opened their invite, there would be a new portion revealed under each flap that would line up with what they previously saw. It started off as an 8.5 x 4.5 envelope that opened up to a 13 x 11 invite. Finding a paper that would work for this concept was difficult, but Eugene and Molly from Rolling Press were super helpful and provided invaluable advice that made this invite shine.

Nautical Wedding Invitations

The nautical-themed wedding trend shows no signs of slowing, and it’s no surprise. Nautical themes are perfect for weddings by the sea, and there are endless numbers of gorgeous wedding destinations that feature sun, sand, and shore. Nautical themes are incredibly versatile, too. You’ll find everything from sophisticated and preppy to whimsical and modern, anchor and rope motifs to more understated, blind debossed nautical maps, flags, and compass details. And while there are many shades of blue to be found in the palettes of these pretty invites – traditional navy, muted slate, and pale seafoam, to name but a few – you can also find complimentary colors like warm red, kelly green, and sunny yellow.

Here’s a little collection of some of the seriously crave-worthy designs that I’ve spotted recently:

Modern Navy Chevron Wedding Invites

Modern Navy Chevron Wedding Invites by Smitten on Paper

Chevron is a smokin’ hot wedding invitation trend right now, and I’m crushing on this bold take on the classic chevron pattern by Smitten on Paper. The rich, navy blue and ivory suite features sleek typography throughout, and the pieces in the suite are well complimented by chevron-lined kraft envelopes, which add a nice contrast the deep navy blue. These invites would be a fantastic choice for any design-minded couple looking for a wedding suite that’s a little bit preppy or subtly nautical.

Ryder’s Nautical Letterpress Baby Announcements

Ryder's Nautical Letterpress Birth Announcements

Sideshow Press creates such amazing pieces of letterpress loveliness, and their latest crush-worthy creation is an adorable nautical birth announcement for little Ryder. The unique announcements include custom bags made of sail cloth from the family’s boat, with Ryder’s initials embroidered onto the bag in the form of signaling code flags (so clever!). White cloth rope, tied in a sailor’s knot, closes the bag. The gorgeous letterpress announcement card continues the clever nautical theme by including Ryder’s vital stats in nautical terminology.

Colorful Nautical Wedding Invitations

I am completely crushing on these colorful, custom wedding invitations by Faye & Co for Crystal and Patrick’s oceanfront wedding celebration. The nautical invites feature fantastic hand-lettering and illustration (aah, swoon), along with  a wonderfully unexpected color palette of magenta, orange, and teal. I have no doubt that invited guests were absolutely delighted to receive these eye-catching invites in their mailboxes and can only imagine how fun this seaside wedding must have been!

Kate + Nick’s Anchor Wedding Invitations

Anchor Letterpress Wedding Invitations

It was crush at first sight the moment I spotted Kate + Nick’s sweet wedding invites over at FPO recently. The pink, gold, and gray color palette is wonderful, and the heart and anchor emblem that ties together all of the pieces in the suite is a little bit nautical and very romantic (as a musician, Nick used to travel regularly, and he called Kate his “anchor”). Additional pieces in the suite, including event “tickets” and “all access passes”, are also a nod to the groom’s profession.

One of my favorite things about this suite, besides the awesome design, is that a mix of printing techniques was used to keep the overall cost down. The main invitation card was beautifully letterpress printed by Spoon and Sailor and, keeping budget in mind, additional pieces were printed on a home laser printer. Tickets were perforated at a local copy shop.

2011 Wedding Collection from Bella Figura

Chapin Letterpress Wedding Invitation

I could get lost (in fact, I almost have a couple of times so far) in the beautiful collection of new letterpress wedding invitations from Bella Figura. Whatever your aesthetic is, I can pretty much guarantee that you’re going to gravitate toward at least one of the designs in the new collection. There’s a little something for everyone: classic, nautical, whimsical, ultra modern, mid-century inspired. I’m only sharing a teeny peek at the new collection, including the wonderful Chapin design by Patricia Mumau (shown above), but you can see everything in its letterpress printed glory at Bella Figura.
